Schwieterman Summer Adventure Series 2025: Part Eight – Colorado
Following our time in Durango, we spent one night in Colorado Springs. Our route took us through Mineral County, the mountainous terrain between Pagosa Springs and South Fork is truly breathtaking. Definitely an area that I would love to explore in the future. We chose to stay at a KOA so the girls could enjoy the waterpark. However, after only an hour of swimming, the dark skies rolled in, and the entire evening showcased a spectacular and rather terrifying thunderstorm with frequent lightening strikes, cracking thunder, hail, and torrential rain. I enjoyed the time cuddling on the couch with the girls as we watched a movie!
The following morning, we visited Garden of the gods state park, which we had visited about ten years prior. It was nice but not nearly as grand as I had remembered, I suppose after spending so much time amidst Utah’s unmatched beauty, my standards had changed. Nonetheless, it was a nice scenic drive, and the girls enjoyed climbing on the red rocks at Balanced Rock. Before loading the camper for our next destination, we opted to check out the river at the campground. There was actually a dam on the property and the rapids below were really flowing following the thunderstorm. It only took a few seconds for the girls to scurry down the rocky slope, slip off their shoes, and find their way into the cool water where they joyfully scavenged sea glass. It was quite an unexpected adventure.
Our final leg of the journey would allow the girls to spend some time out of the camper as they bunked with their cousins. We visited my husband’s other sister in Evergreen, CO. This year’s summer adventure allowed us to spend time with all his siblings and the girls were over-the-moon about sharing our adventures with their cousins. We parked our camper for three nights in their driveway and enjoyed some more quality time with family. It just so happened that our visit coincided with the Dam Duck Derby, so we purchased our “six-quack” to join in the town’s festivities. Our ducks didn’t win, but we had a blast watching thousands of rubber ducks being dropped by a crane into Bear Creek.
Our final day in Evergreen was spent relaxing at the pool, which not only allowed us to come home from vacation with a nice tan, but provided a great way to unwind before our marathon sitting session. On our drive home, we covered over 1200 miles in just two days, two very, very long days of sitting in the truck. The girls were amazing in the back seat, not a single, “are we there yet?” I think everyone was eager to get home, so we all just adopted a “grin and bear it” attitude.
2025’s summer vacation allowed us to spend one week in Utah and another week in Colorado making some pretty amazing memories and capturing postcard-worthy shots of God’s great creation. I truly don’t have just one favorite memory; the entire trip was one incredibly long favorite moment. With the exception of the terrible drive to Grosvenor Arch on the world’s bumpiest dirt road, a not-so-great campground in Kansas, and the hiccups we encountered traveling around Indianapolis on our way home, the entire vacation was a tremendous success!
Thank you for journeying with us as we Traveled with Our Trachie on another exciting adventure.
